Keet Makes Surprise Announcement After NBC Win

Following Durban City’s Nedbank Cup triumph, the side’s first choice goalkeeper Darren Keet has announced he will retire at the end of the current season.

Keet, 36, joined City at the start of the campaign after their promotion from the Motsepe Foundation Championship side and has been mainstay and influential for the KwaZulu-Natal-based outfit.

He’s managed 12 clean sheets in the Betway Premiership where City sits in seventh position on the table with 36 points in 26 outings.

The former Bafana Bafana international has also been a star in the side’s Ke Yona Cup campaign, saving crucial penalties in two rounds en-route the final.

And in the final against TS Galaxy at Peter Mokaba Stadium it was his teammate who scored in his net when City came from a goal down to historically lift the trophy for the first time – the feat also means City will play in the CAF Confederation Cup next season.

Speaking to the media after the game Keet said it was a special occasion that was also attended by his family before admitting he will be hanging up his gloves when the campaign ends.

“Obviously it’s special,” said Keet.

“You know, my parents have been there, obviously throughout my whole career. My dad’s never really been one to be involved, so it’s nice for him to enjoy these moments, for them to enjoy my last trophy. And I’m hoping they enjoyed it.

“My dad cried a bit. I haven’t cried yet, but when I saw some of the players crying, then you feel like crying also.

“But happy tears at the moment and happy smiles at the moment, but very special for me to have my family and my parents and my wife and my kids just awesome, awesome experience overall.

“I’m not hinting at anything, I’m calling it quits at the end of the season. So Nedbank Cup was my first and Nedbank Cup is my last [trophy].”
