Pirates Give Makhaula Update After Health Scare

Orlando Pirates have confirmed that midfielder Makhehlene Makhaula has been given the all-clear to resume training in the coming days after he had to be substitued and rushed to hospital in their 4-0 win over Hungry Lions in the Nedbank Cup.

Makhaula was complaining about chest pains and shortness of breath just before half-time in Pirates’ Nedbank Cup clash, leading to medics rushing him to hospital.

However, Jose Riveiro had already confirmed during Monday’s Nedbank Cup draw this the midfielder is much better.

“He’s alright,” Riveiro stated on Monday.

“It was scary, it was a difficult moment but in the end it was not as bad as it looked [initially].

“Right now, he’s much better. He’s going to get another assessment from the doctors tomorrow [Tuesday] and hopefully he can start working normally with the team this week.”

On Tuesday, Pirates stated that Makhaula has been cleared to return to training on Wednesday.

“Orlando Pirates can confirm that midfielder Makhehlene Makhaula has been given the all-clear to resume training in the coming days, following his early withdrawal from the Nedbank Cup Round of 16 fixture against Hungry Lions at Orlando Stadium,” the club stated.

“The 34-year-old had to be stretchered off the field just before halftime on Saturday after complaining of chest pains and shortness of breath. He was treated by the Club’s medical team with assistance from the medics and promptly transferred to Milpark Hospital for further medical treatment.

“All necessary investigations have been conducted, and the player has since been discharged after consultation with a specialist.

“Makhaula is scheduled to return to training on Wednesday, following assessment from the Pirates Medical Team.”

Makhaula himself has revealed that he has been given a few extra days to rest before he can rejoin his teammates.

“I have been ordered to rest and have been taking it easy,” he said, as per Pirates’ website.

“The coach and the team doctor will advise on how quickly I can rejoin the team, but I’m feeling 100% and ready to go.”

Pirates’ next fixture only comes after the international breat when they face Sekhukhune United in a DStv Premiership encounter at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday, 30 March.
