‘Tito’ Brace Sends Pirates Into NBK Cup Last 16

Patrick Maswanganyi scored twice as Orlando Pirates booked a Nedbank Cup last 16 berth after beating Richards Bay 3-1 at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Maswanganyi had the first real chance toward goal in the 17th minute but his shot sailed inches over the Bay crossbar.

‘Tito’ then made up for his missed chance, breaking the deadlock in the 21st minute with a pile drive from the edge of the box to make it 1-0.

It was 2-0 just five minutes later as Maswanganyi grabbed his brace after being put through by Relebohile Mofokeng.

Thato Mohlamme missed a chance to pull one back for Bay in the 31st minute as his close-range shot hit the crossbar.

The Natal Rich Boyz reduced the deficit in the 47th minute with Yanela Mbuthuma tapping in from close range after Melusi Buthelezi parried the ball into his path.

Tshegofatso Mabaso was then denied his side’s third goal in a one-versus-one situation by Ian Otieno in the 72nd minute.

Mabasa added the third in the 92nd minute to all but see Pirates through.

The defending champions survived a late onslaught from Papi Zothwane’s charges to join the likes of Marumo Gallants, Chippa United and Mamelodi Sundowns in the next round.
