Celta President Praises Benni Impact

Celta Vigo president Carlos Mourino only had positive words for former Bafana Bafana striker Benni McCarthy, who spent three years with the LaLiga side.

The former Orlando Pirates and Porto striker featured in 97 games for the LaLiga side, scoring 27 goals before he eventually left to Porto – first on loan before completing a permanent move to the Portuguese giants, where he famously won the UEFA Champions League.

Even though, McCarthy somewhat struggled at Celta, the club’s president still holds the South African in high regard.

“Well for us he was a great help. He was at Celta in a good time for the club,” Mourino said when asked by iDiski Times about McCarthy.

“We unfortunately were unable to sign him full-time. But when he was with Celta he did very well.

“He scored goals, that was his mission.”

Mourino spoke to iDiski Times during a zoom meeting with several media houses from around the globe, addressing topics such as the club’s financial overhaul, why they have one of the most acclaimed youth academies in Spain and how difficult it is to compete with giants such as FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.

In addition, Mourinho also explained that Celta are aiming to focus more on internationalisation and brand building on continents outside of Europe.

Celta will face reigning LaLiga champions Atletico Madrid at 22:00 on Saturday.
