Former Bafana Striker Lands New Club In Asia

Forgotten Bafana Bafana striker Lars Veldwijk has joined Thailand’s first-tier outfit BG Pathum United after parting ways with Spanish side Castellón.

Veldwijk, 32, had been without a club after his three-year stay with Suwon FC came to an end in September 2023 before he was snapped up by the Primera Federación side in Spain’s third tier.

He was part of Stuart Baxter’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations squad in Egypt though he only got to make one substitute appearance. He’s featured just seven times for the South African national team since being called up in 2016 without opening his goalscoring account.

Veldwijk, who holds both South African and Dutch citizenship, took to the club’s official website to express his delight at joining his new employers.

“I feel very happy coming to play at BG Pathum. I want to come back and play. in Asia again I love Thailand Although I may not know much about Thai teams, I have seen BG in the ACL when they played against teams from South Korea. And they did very well. I know BG Pathum is one of the big teams and I think we will play for all the trophies. I hope that my experience will help the team be successful,” he said.

The 2023/24 Revo Cup Champions also released a statement, welcoming the towering striker back to Asia.

“For Lars Feldweg, his height is 197 centimeters. He was called up to the South African national team according to his father’s nationality between 2016 and 2019. He started playing football. Career in the Dutch league in his hometown through playing with many clubs, including Volendam, Utrecht, Dordrecht, Excelsior, Zwolle, Gro. Ningen, Sparta Rotterdam, and also played with Nottingham Forest in the English league and Kortrijk in the Belgian league.

“He has also played in Asia with Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors and Suwon FC in the K League, South Korea, and most recently with Castellon in Liga 3 of Spain before moving to be a new member at BG. stadium.”

Last season, he made just six starts for Castellón and failed to find the back of the net, providing just a single assist.

He will be hoping to once again find his scoring boots that once saw him become one of the most feared strikers in South Korea’s K-League while on the books of both Jeonbuk Hyundai and Suwon FC.
