Former Wydad Athletic Club head coach Rulani Mokwena has sent a farewell message to his last employers and the club’s fans, while also stating he is “actively exploring new opportunities”.
On Tuesday, Wydad and Mokwena had officially terminated his contract, with the club stating they parted “united in gratitude and mutual respect”.
Mokwena, who was in charge of 35 games, winning 14, had been on special leave for the last three games, which the Moroccan giants won to secure a return to the CAF Interclub competition.
The South African tactician who is still only 38 has bid farewell to his former club and players, but also looked ahead to his own future.
“Big Thank You. After an extraordinary season at Wydad AC, I’m moving on and taking the next step in my coaching journey. Under the circumstances, I am so proud of our work, even though we know we could have done a lot better. Wydad being back in Africa is an important step for this great club because competing in Africa is where this club belongs,” he stated on social media.
“Arriving in a new terrain to build a completely new team and witnessing it develop into a united group really lays a strong foundation for future success. We achieved this despite many difficult challenges and moments, most notably our regretful and unfortunate loss to MAS. However, this also sparked our longest winning streak of 5 matches and a disappointing streak of 7 consecutive draws – but my stoic self sees a perspective that set a new record of 14 games unbeaten in Botola – a great platform not to be celebrated but a great springboard for future success.
“Arriving at the end in 3d place was not the target but we can take great pride in our efforts as a team and this mentality shows not only the great demands placed at a big club but also certainly the expectation set on myself and our people.
“This couldn’t have been possible without the players. I’m especially grateful to have worked alongside such a humble, passionate, dedicated, and talented group. Be patient with them; this can become a great group led by a great President.
“To the fans, thank you for all your love and support. Even in the difficult moments, we felt your energy and desire for success and excellence. Lastly, to the staff, thank you, and I sincerely wish you all the best and great development.
“Now, I’m actively exploring new opportunities in football management where I can help players improve and build another project that aligns with my football beliefs and passion, assisting in driving competitive success both on and off the pitch.
“Appreciate all the support as I take this next step.
With gratitude, Rulani Mokwena.”
