Two SA Talents On Trial At European Giants

Two young South African talents are spending a week on trial at the prestigious Youth Academy of Dutch giants Feyenoord Rotterdam.

The defending Eredivisie champions, who are also regulars in the UEFA Champions League, have one of the most famed academies in Europe.

Luke Hendricks (Ubuntu Academy) and Asher Field (Stellenbosch FC) were invited by the Dutch giants after attending a camp in Cape Town facilitated by leading sports tourism agency Sim Tours in December.

Hendricks, 16, is a hybrid centre-back and Field, 16, is a tracking midfielder, with both hoping to impress the Feyenoord U16 coaches this week.

The duo have already met former Feyenoord, Manchester United and Arsenal striker Robin Van Persie, who is now coaching the Dutch side’s U18 side.

“The boys had their first training session today (Monday) and will participate in a friendly tomorrow (Tuesday) against Excelsior Rotterdam,” Rasthoem Simons of 5sSports/Sim Tours told iDiski Times.

“It’s an unbelievable opportunity for the boys and we look forward to opening more doors for our youngsters back home (regardless of the club’s they play for).

“Many years ago I was here with a young Teboho Mokoena as well.”

A young Teboho Mokoena was on a similar trip to Feyenoord with Sim Tours during the youthful days of his career.
