While he only has a year remaining on his contract, Varbergs BoIS star Tashreeq Matthews looks set to spend one more season at the Allsvenskan club.
The 21-year-old South African winger had an excellent season for the Swedish club, scoring five and assisting five, in 27 appearances, and was named the club’s Breakout Player of the Year at the end of the year awards.
Varbergs coach Joakim Persson was quoted as telling FotbollDirekt that it would need to be a really good offer to pry Matthews away.
“The sale in Varbergs Bois is over now,” Person said when quizzed about Matthews’ future.
“Other players go for almost 30 million Krona (€3 million). If we do not get something real, we will probably not consider it. But it is clear that if the right offer comes for the player and us, it can change.”
Persson feels that Matthews should play another season at the club, and then he will find himself in even more demand.
“If he plays 30 matches in the Allsvenskan, we have a very good player, and after that he hopefully has great opportunities to choose between significantly more clubs than at present,” he continued.
“Today, there may be four or five clubs to choose from, when he is out of contract, there are significantly more options, which is good for his career.”
“Interest has come from Germany, Holland and Sweden. But nothing concrete exists at all. But as I said, there is no sale here anymore, quality simply costs.”
The former Ajax Cape Town youth product joined Varbergs from Borussia Dortmund in January 2020.
