Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has revealed that he has been asked by clubs in Belgium about Mamelodi Sundowns duo, Teboho Mokoena and Khuliso Mudau.
The national team coach was having a round-table talk with media on Thursday and discussed a host of topics, including Relebohile Mofokeng’s future as well as interest from Belgium in his players.
Broos insisted that Bafana’s improved performances, especially at the recent AFCON, has also awoken interest in his players.
“I got some phone calls already,” he stated.
“I got some because they follow a little bit more now I think the South African competition, and this is also something, what I said before, the national team is the image of your football.
“And when your national team has results, automatically people are interested in players of that country. Why everybody wants Ivory Coast players, Senegal players and Cameroon players, why? They always win AFCON.
“For us, it was how many years ago they had a bronze medal? 22 years ago, something like that. How can you know South African players in Europe? They don’t see them.
“Everybody’s following AFCON because they know for them it’s cheap players. They are cheap. €1 million, €2 million is cheap for Europe.
“Now after the AFCON they came to me and said, ‘Hey, this Mokoena is a good player, and I had a good keeper’. And then they see the age, which is a pity for Ronwen. He is over 30. If Ronwen was three, four years younger, he was gonna [be abroad] now.
“But yeah, they are following Mudau, they are following Mokoena because they saw it [AFCON]. We played for the third place.
“And that is important. You will see, imagine that we can qualify for World Cup. You will see immediately there will be players [scouted], and then it’s up to them to perform.
“Because if they are and they don’t perform, it will be finished very quickly. But if you can perform then you will see, because it’s ‘cheap players’ for Europe, there are cheap – South Africans are sheep.
“It’s for R40 million. It’s quite a lot of money [in SA]. But for European clubs… or R20 million. And they know that one or two years later, it is [a potential sale for] R100 million or R200 million they can get from the players they paid only R20 million.”
