Bobby – How Chiefs’ Scouting Has Changed

Kaizer Chiefs Football Manager Bobby Motaung has revealed how the club’s scouting strategy has changed, and is dictated by other aspects like modern technologies and modern coaches preferring different things.

Previously Chiefs were known for recruiting unknown talent from across Africa with the likes of Bobby and Ace Khuse going on scouting missions abroad to find gems that made a difference in the side.

However lately fans feel the club is settling for what’s available and/or free agents from local rivals. Motaung addressed the matter with Robert Marawa, saying the evolution of the game means that the talent identification happens via analysts and networks more than individuals but gave an assurance that the club is hands on recruitment matters.

“I used to go to Zimbabwe with friends, but it’s not like this anymore,” said Motaung on Radio947.

“It’s deeper, we sit and knuckle down deeper with consensus, it’s not like before. Even the Sporting Director doesn’t make decisions alone, the coach doesn’t make decision alone.

“The coach has analysts to recruit, so recruitment has changed. It’s not Bobby now, or Ace Khuse, or Doctor Khumalo or the late Bra Screamer, may his sole rest in peace.

“The difference is obviously the way the scouting network happens and the technology and how coaches believe in certain aspects

“And also, like I said, the game has changed and the quality then and now and obviously how technology works in scouting, there’s a scouting systems that they use.

“But like I say, in those years, generations have changed, times have changed even the quality of players have changed in some areas.

“But definitely the club is hands on in terms of dealing with the scouting and getting players and everything. In the past yes, might have been the phase but it was collective.

“Even then it was collective because you can’t bring a player and give him to the coach and the coach doesn’t want him or doesn’t suit the style.

“So that culture is still there in terms of how we scout and how we still give input. But like I said, modern times, modern changes, modern coaches they differ.”
