Former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Lebohang ‘Cheeseboy’ Mokoena says if the rumours about Relebohile Mofokeng possibly moving abroad at the end of the season are true that would be great for the winger’s career.
The 20-year-old has impressed for the Ghost since his promotion to the first team two-and-half seasons ago and he has also gone on to be a regular in the national senior team.
He has previously been invited to train with EPL side Wolverhampton, which has been followed by reported interests from clubs in Scotland and recently Spanish giants Barcelona, although for their B team.
Mokoena spoke to iDiski Times writer Lethabo Kganyago in edition 195 of the newspaper where he said the youngster is surrounded by responsible adults which is important in such matters. The former Moroka Swallows man, however, emphasised that Mofokeng needs to stay grounded and not be distracted.
“I think that would be a decision from his agent,” Mokoena told iDiski Times.
“You know, his father played the game, so he probably knows. I think he’s also under good leadership at Orlando Pirates.
“If he gets an opportunity to go overseas, why not? Obviously, it’s going to be growth for him. Still a lot to improve from his side. So, if he leaves maybe at the end of the season, I think it would be great for him personally, for him to grow as a footballer.
“Sometimes, you get distracted by these offers that are not even on the table and you find that there’s not even one [real] offer. But the way we hype things up, we start distracting the players.
“So, he must just focus on playing and the most important thing is for him to stay injury-free, to develop his game and somebody will come knocking at the door.
“But if there is a move, I would prefer a Spanish league, I would prefer maybe a Portuguese league, French league, more technical leagues, which he can grow from there.”
