Kaizer Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy is set for a move to Sabah FK who have just won the Azerbaijan Premier League and qualified for the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League.

McCarthy, 22, recently signed a two-year deal with an option to extend with Chiefs as a reward for an incredible breakout season at the club, where he became the cornerstone of their defence.

As Chiefs finished third in the league, their highest finish and first top-three spot, in six years, McCarthy stood out and it’s no surprise that interest was brewing.

He spent a month on trial as a teenager in Moldova at one of the rising clubs in Europe, FC Sheriff – and while that deal didn’t materialise, he’s now set to finally land a move abroad.

Sabah, founded eight years ago, is the former club of Hendrick ‘Pule’ Ekstein, and since his time at the club, they have grown in leaps and bounds, winning two domestic cups and now their first league title.

They will start in the first qualifying round of the Champions League, but there’s optimism, with the off-season investment incoming, they will make a major impact in their debut in the competition.

Sources close to Chiefs have confirmed a deal has been struck, with the player set to depart this evening in order to finalise the transfer, which is believed to be a three-year deal with an option to extend.

The 22-year-old featured 31 times for Amakhosi last season, scoring twice, missing only seven league games.
