Sekhukhune United captain Linda Mntambo says Elias Mokwana’s meteoric rise is a testament to the club and the playing squad overall.
Mokwana secured a move to four-time African champions Esperance Sportive de Tunis, signing a three-year deal in a transfer worth around $400,000.
Having been playing in the ABC Motsepe League back in 2021, he’s made the move to the second-tier, Sekhukhune, become a Bafana Bafana winger and moved to Taraji in the space of three and half years.
“In terms of losing players it’s the nature of football, players come and go, some leave for better opportunities, some leave because their contracts are over, when it comes to Elias, he was exceptional for us for the past season,” Mntambo said.
“But what makes Elias be the person he is, is his teammates you know, we are a team, sometimes we tend to look at an individual and forget the rest of the squad. Or maybe just the XI that starts the game or the 20 that travels.
“But there are the guys left behind, iron sharpens iron at training, we make each other better you know if we train hard and push ourselves every day at training, we make it easy to compete on matchday.
“I think if Elias is honest enough, he knows his teammates, the coaches he worked with that he finds himself where he is in Tunisia, so we wish him everything of the best in his new club, we hope he flies the South African flag high, he’s not just flying Sekhukhune’s flag but the country also, he’s an ambassador for the country.
“He will open doors – if he does well there – he brings in a lot of scouts to come in and search for talent in our country.”
Mokwana scored six goals with seven assists in 65 games across all competitions in his two seasons with Babina Noko after joining the club from Platinum City Rovers.
