New Stellenbosch FC defender Given Msimango has explained why he opted to join the Cape Winelands side, saying he wants to take the team to the great heights of previous seasons.

Stellenbosch had been one an upward trajectory, featuring in back-to-back MTN8 finals but suffered losses on both occasions to Orlando Pirates.

The Cape Winelands side didn’t only do well domestically but also on the African continent, where they reach CAF Confederation Cup semi-final semi-final but lost to Simba SC in 2024/25.

Winds of change were ringing last campaign, when the side struggled domestically and Steve Barker opted to leave in December to join Tanzanian giants Simba, with Gavin Hunt stabilising the ship.

However, there have been many changes to the squad this transfer window, with Msimango and Ashley Du Preez the latest arrivals in a deal that saw Langelihle Phili move the other way.

“It feels great to be part of Stellenbosch FC,” Msimango said.

“This is a great environment with good management, fantastic coaching staff, and a team that wants to compete, which are all ingredients you need for success.

“Stellenbosch is an ambitious team that wants to compete and win things. The team recently competed in the CAF Confederation Cup, and I want to compete with the Club at the highest level and try to reach those heights again.

“I want to stay consistent with my performances and try to help the team as much as I can. I’m here to work hard for the Club, and I’ve already received messages of support from our fans, so I hope to be able to make them happy this season.”
