South African defender Tylon Smith is set to for a move to Major League Soccer from English Championship club Queens Park Rangers.
Smith, 21, joined QPR from Stellenbosch at the start of last season after winning the U20 Africa Cup of Nations and starring at the U20 FIFA World Cup with South Africa.
And after racking up four first team appearances for the English club, he looks set to make the move to MLS for a more prominent role.
Sources close to the club in the United States of America have confirmed the two club’s have reached an agreement for a season-long loan with an option to make the deal permament.
Marko Mitrović, the head coach of New England, was in charge of the USA U20 squad during the World Cup, when his side faced off against Amajita in Chile and would have seen Smith at close quarters.
The move is set to provide the promising centre-back an opportunity to cement himself in a competitive league, where Bafana Bafana duo Olwethu Makhanya, formerly with Philadelphia Union and Mbekezeli Mbokazi has begun to impress.
