Benni – I Wonder Now Who’s The One Laughing?
AmaZulu head coach Benni McCarthy was delighted after the club secured second spot in the DStv Premiership, and says the club have proven a lot of people wrong with this achievement.
McCarthy says he’s delighted for the players, bouncing back after they’d lost two games in a row, and beating a team who had only lost once this season before this.
“I’m just extremely excited and happy for the players. You know, I think they deserve it. They’ve been fantastic throughout the season. Yes, I know, people say that last two games, we didn’t get the win. We were off the pace. But when you have a 16 unbeaten run, of course, some where along the line, people are gonna want to take you off your perch, and make things difficult for us, and that’s exactly what happened.”
“But a champion is judged on how he gets up, and how we moving forward. And last two games, two losses… but against one of the toughest teams in the league, a team that are a team that has 19 draws, one defeat, and we come in and we played them off the park, and we could have added more to the goal scoring chart, but we take the one nil win, and it gives us the three points, the valuable three points that we needed.”
“And now we can go and we can see how everything else unfolds, and who fights for number three, and for number four. “
McCarthy says he is excited to bring CAFCL action to the KZN province, and hopes they can play the games at their Kings Park fortress.
“But Champions League football is coming to the KZN region. And we are super proud, I’m proud of AmaZulu players. I’m proud of the technical staff, the guys that work with me, I’m proud of everyone who is associated with the club.
“We all deserve this, not just me and the players and the team, everyone involved with the, club has been amazing. But the football that we that we played, and being back at the Johnsons Kings Park Stadium, it’s just been a fortress throughout and hopefully we can maintain this and we can work with the Sharks rugby, so that we can bring Champions League football to the stadium. Because ja, you can see how familiar and how good the players are on this pitch.
“So ja, we want to just go and do well, from now we want to enjoy the moment. I know there’s one more game to go, but we are there. We’ve achieved the unthinkable. “
Finally McCarthy concluded by saying that a lot of people had doubted the ambitious AmaZulu owners, and had called Benni overrated, but he is now having the last laugh.
“When I joined people say the president said he wants a top four finish. People said that he was crazy. And when I joined people say that I was overrated. I was fired from Cape Town City and that I was gonna fail. And that I’m not a good coach. So I wonder now who’s the one who’s laughing?”
