Jessica Motaung Addresses Chiefs’ Women’s Team

Kaizer Chiefs Marketing and Commercial Director Jessica Motaung has addressed the delay of the formation of their women’s team.

Chiefs have long been in the works of either forming or purchasing a status of a women’s team with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) setting requirements for Africa’s biggest clubs to get involved in the women’s game.

Should any team qualify for CAF inter-club competitions, they would need to have a women’s team or hold an affiliation with one, in order to participate in the Champions League or Confederation Cup.

Amakhosi were notably making an attempt to purchase the JVW status a season ago but the two parties were far apart in valuation of the status and eventually, the deal fell through and Motaung admits they have been weighing options.

“It’s on the cards, it’s very important, it’s a project that is happening, there’s a lot of work being done behind the scenes, people just need to give us the time to be able to finish and do the work,” Motaung said at the recent FIFA Twinning Project graduation.

“Our focus is obviously to make sure the first team is secure, making [sure] our development academy is in place, and then making sure we have the right resources to put a female team in place.”

Noting that they are addressing the other pressing issues for the long-term future of Chiefs, Motaung also addressed the recent concerns of the top-flight women’s league that has been disrupted this season.

“But certainly, I’m encouraged by the work I’ve done on the continent. The work I’ve seen being done, women’s football and women’s sport is flying,” she continued.

“In fact, we need to accelerate where we’re going. But we also need to look at our structures, do we have an environment conducive to have a women’s league. We have a league that hasn’t even started.

“How is [coach] Desiree [Ellis] choosing players amidst a space where players should have three, four games have not had a chance to play, we really need to look at the eco-system, it’s not just about starting a team – you need sustainability, a strong league.

“A league that is structured for women that in a way they can get a good platform to showcase their talents. So, for me, I think we need to look at it holistically and not just expect teams to start in a vacuum, I mean I love the work that’s been starting the HollywoodBets [Super League].

“But we need to look; is this taking us where we need to go? And if it’s not, what needs to be done to have a league that is sustainable and also feeds our women’s national team.”
