Banyana Banyana striker Thembi Kgatlana has shared light into why the Mexican women’s league is attractive which is reflective in the stands.
Speaking to iDiski Times writer Lethabo Kganyago in edition 191 of the newspaper, Kgatlana said the men’s leagues running simultaneously as the women’s together with junior sides and also how they are able to pull sponsors is also something that draws people to stadiums.

The former Women’s African Player of the Year also added that player recruitment and broadcast of the games have also contributed to a point where she realises the people are more than in most matches in South Africa’s PSL.
“You also see that Mexico is a footballing nation,” Kgatlana told iDiski Times.
“They love football. And I think with that being said, in the back of my mind, you see, every time when Tigress plays, there are so many people at the stadium. I’ve been looking at the PSL, and they don’t attract so many fans anymore besides the Soweto Derby actually. I was talking to a friend the other day about the Soweto Derby, everyone goes out to watch it, but other games during the weekend and the week, no one goes there, only an X amount of people.

“Believe it or not, my games here in Mexico are always fuller than what the PSL is producing. And you see, that comes with an investment, clubs going out to get sponsors doing promotions to get people to come to the stadium, signing the right players to be able to play the football or the style of play that the club wants.
“But the biggest thing also is getting football to be shown on TV so people can see, ‘oh, actually, there are women players’. It’s pretty amazing to see there are 18 teams, and most of them have almost similar sponsors. That says a lot about the Mexican League.
“Obviously, you know that the more sponsors you have, the better chances you have of generating income for players.”
