Mamelodi Sundowns defender Mothobi Mvala admits he thought his time was up at the club and expressed the one thing he missed upon an emotional injury return.
Mvala, 32, endured two injury-ravaged seasons, with only 12 appearances over the past two seasons, but he’s now returned with two consecutive starts in the Carling KnockOut Cup and producing displays as if he’s never been away from the Maandawana set-up.

After helping Sundowns into the semi-finals of the domestic cup competition, the attentions are now firmly on the CAF Super Cup this weekend, when they host Algerian giants USM Alger at Loftus Versfeld in the 15h00 kickoff.
Speaking ahead of the game in the media open day at Chloorkop, Mvala cut a figure of one of relief when explaining his emotion of being back on the green grass.
“It feels great to be back on the field to be with my teammates, to go to the corner flag after scoring, celebrating with them, give each other hugs, high fives, those are the moments I missed a lot,” he said.
“Getting some minutes, it gives me motivation because I was out for long, I was worried if I would ever be back in the team and now, I’m back with the guys. The feeling is amazing, I never thought I’d be back and playing the way, I’ve been.
“Kudos to the coaches, medical staff, my teammates, the senior players, Themba Zwane, people who were there for me – that feeling of being tired after a game, I really missed it, so it’s amazing.”
Mvala joined Sundowns from Highlands Park in 2020 and has amassed 125 appearances for the club, scoring seven goals, with four assists to his name.
