Mokwena: I Do Also Marvel Watching Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena has been calculative in what he said to the media because he feels many blow things out of proportion and it hurts him deeply, but he admitted he sometimes marvels to watch his charges.

Sundowns yet again coasted to another victory as they brushed aside Polokwane City at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday, with a brace by Brazilian forward Lucas Ribeiro Costa.

It was the sixth league win of the season in six matches for the Tshwane giants, emphatically throwing another gauntlet this season yet again that they are here fight for the trophy they have won sixth times in the row.

It was another educational football in Limpopo, as Sundowns pulled Polokwane apart with ease, with Costa dusting himself off to blast from the spot-kick in the early first half.

He then took full advantage of Rise and Shine lackadaisical defending in the second half when goalkeeper Lindokuhle Mathebula palmed the ball in his path before slotting it into the empty net.

“Yes, a lot,” said Mokwena, when asked if he and his technical team enjoy watching their team.

“I tell them to show how good they are and it is one thing I tell them. I tell them that I enjoy watching them play and I think maybe that sense is my youthfulness because I say to them, for the 90 minutes that on the pitch, I would love to have a story that I enjoy watching what I saw, not just the results and that is the pressure of [coaching] Mamelodi Sundowns.

“You have got to play well and win. Winning without a performance is not good enough.”

It means Sundowns, in six matches, have collected 18 points and sit on top, having scored 13 goals and conceded just two.

As they have not suffered a league loss since September last year to SuperSport United, Mokwena was asked if anyone will stop the Tshwane giants domestically.

“It is a long road,” he replied.

“But I just wanna congratulate the players for being amazing once again, showing good mentality, earning another important and difficult three points against the Motsepe Foundation Championship champions.”

Sundowns, now unbeaten in 30 league matches across two seasons, are one game shy to equal the record of Kaizer Chiefs, who went for an amazing run of 31 games on their way to win the league title under the late Ted Dumitru in the 2004/05 season.

Sundowns next face the same Chiefs in the MTN8 first leg semi final at FNB Stadium on Saturday (15:00).
