Mokwena Explains Low Scoring Issue In Algeria

Mouloudia Club d’Alger head coach Rulani Mokwena has opened up on what could be the factor with low-scoring games in the Algerian league.

The Algerian league is amongst the best leagues on the African continent and is a well-run league, but it hasn’t reached the level it is expected to reach.

For the past eight seasons, no Algerian team has reached the CAF Champions League semi-final. Even this season, both MCA and JSK were eliminated in the group stages.

This has become a concern for the Algerian people, and they are looking for solutions because signing foreign players might not work, as they have strict rules: clubs are only allowed to sign two foreign players, who must be under the age of 30 and must have represented their national teams.

MCA have scored 18 goals in 17 games this season, which means they score one goal per game, and they failed to score in four games and following a goalless draw between MCA and JSK in the Algerian league, Mokwena was asked about the lack of goals from the Algerian league.

The South African mentor explained in detail, stating that sometimes the solution is not in Algeria, and gave an example about his former side, Mamelodi Sundowns.

“I don’t read French, I struggle [but I have people around me that are helping me],” he told the media.

“Someone shows me the newspaper article that covered this game between MCA and JSK and the journalist I am not sure who was the journalist said Mouloudia was working on the finishing and set pieces, you do not know how much we work on this, on offensive patterns, offensive movements and dynamics trying to create chances even when we don’t have possession more than this I cannot do.

“I will make a very good example, we play Sundowns in November here 0-0 we should win we have a lot of chances but we take one point, the mercato [transfer window] happens, Sundowns spend $3.5m on Leon and in the next game he scored the two goals so there are many things you have to think about.

“I would love to spend 3.5 million Euros so solve the goal scoring problem because the solution might not be in Algeria, but my problem is not my problem it’s our problem and now I am part of Algerian football.”
