The CANAL+ Group has confirmed it has extended its agreement with the National Soccer League (NSL) to continue broadcasting Premier Soccer League football live on SuperSport across Sub-Saharan Africa, a deal announced on the same day the French media giant confirmed its listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

The announcement comes in the wake of CANAL+’s acquisition of MultiChoice Group, and signals the new parent company’s intention to double down on local football as a cornerstone of its African content strategy.

The extended partnership covers the full suite of PSL competitions – the Betway Premiership, the MTN8, the Carling Knockout, the Nedbank Cup, and the Motsepe Foundation Championship – all of which will continue to air on SuperSport channels via DStv.

In South Africa, the SuperSport channels are supplied by CANAL+ to MultiChoice, which distributes DStv to subscribers.

PSL chairman Dr Irvin Khoza welcomed the renewal, framing it in the language of institution-building. “Football institutions are built through consistency, responsible stewardship and strong relationships,” he said.

“Together, the PSL and SuperSport have worked to grow the game, strengthen our clubs and bring South African football to audiences across the continent.”

CANAL+ Africa CEO David Mignot pointed to the drama of the recently concluded Betway Premiership season as evidence of the league’s growing appeal.

“The continued success of South African club football is reflected in one of the most competitive Betway Premiership seasons in recent memory, with the title only being decided on the final matchday,” he said, also paying tribute to the contributions of Dr Khoza and Dr Kaizer Motaung in shaping the league over the years.

Mignot added that the deal reflects a broader commitment to African football. “Having operated on the African continent for more than three decades, we know the importance of football and what it means to viewers.”
