France head coach Didier Deschamps has revelled in their victory over Morocco as they sealed their spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-finals.

France will now await the winner between Belgium and Spain after eliminating Africa’s last representative in the competition at the last eight stage.

After a first half characterised by several missed chances, including a penalty, which Yassine Bannou saved against Kylian Mbappe, the European giants went on to score two goals in the second half via Mbappe and reigning Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele.

Three World Cups. Three semi-finals. For Deschamps, the streak is starting to look less like fortune and more like a habit.

“We were not efficient as expected, but there were no doubts in our heads,” he said. “The players of Morocco got tired, and we opened the game up and didn’t give them many chances.

“We created chances for our attackers, we played high up the pitch, which was a confirmation of what we fought for – a spot in the semi-final — and we’re very proud.”

A Third Straight Semi-Final

With France now into the last four for a third consecutive World Cup, Deschamps was asked what’s behind the run of sustained success; and he wasn’t shy about sharing the credit.

“Excellent players, great players; credit to the players, but maybe I do my job well too,” he said.

“It goes without saying, in addition to today’s result. Warren [Zaire-Emery] didn’t play in the tournament, and he did well on the pitch.

“There’s some who didn’t play yet, but it’s a new adventure we’re sharing. I’m happy on a personal level and seeing my players enjoy their football.”
