Jomo Cosmos boss Ephraim ‘Jomo’ Sono has dropped a bombshell regarding the standard of refereeing in the ABC Motsepe League.

Ezenkosi were relegated to amateur football at the end of the 2021/22 National First Division season for the first time.

Since being relegated from top-flight football in 2008, they have been unable to make a comeback and there has been numerous reports of alleged match-fixing in the ABC League for a number of years.

The former Bafana Bafana coach was bold enough to call a spade a spade in an interview with Thabiso Mosia on Radio 2000.

Though he was complimentary of half the referees in the league, he was equally critical of others who have made it difficult for them.

“It’s very tough in the ABC Motsepe League,” he said on Radio 2000.

“Fifty percent of the referees are good. Twenty-five percent are fair and the other twenty-five percent is just rubbish.

“Those ones you can see when the game starts that today you won’t win.

“I think God put me in the Motsepe Foundation for a reason, so that I can see the rot that’s happening. All the amateur players are not protected.

“The Chairmen of the clubs are not protected. The PSL clubs take advantage of us and come and take our players for free.”

Despite their downward spiral in recent years, Cosmos have enjoyed significant success in the club’s history by winning the Coca-Cola Cup in the 2002/03 and 2005/06 seasons, SAA Top 8 in 2003/04 and the league title in the form of NPSL in the 1986/87 season.
