Ghana national team head coach Milovan Rajevac has got his goal-difference calculations wrong after their 1-1 draw against Ethiopia on Thursday in the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers game.
The Black Stars are second in Group G with ten points behind Bafana Bafana who have accumulated 13 points so far, with one game left to decide the group winners.
However, the Serbian coach seemingly thought it would be decided on the head to head record, thinking they have to beat Hugo Broos’ men by two goals upwards for them to qualify to the next round of the World Cup Qualifiers.
But the matter is, any win for Ghana will crush South African’s Qatar hopes, as Rajevac’s men could qualify to the next round if they beat Bafana, a 1-0 win will increase Ghana’s goal-difference to +4 and reduce SA’s to +4. So in that way, the Black Stars goal tally will increase to seven, and Bafana will remain at six.
“I want to congratulate my boys for fighting very hard. We were expecting a tough match today. Then I want to congratulate the Ethiopian team for a really good performance today, they deserve this result,” he said after the match at Orlando Stadium.
“We had some problems in the defence especially today we made some mistakes so after all, everything will be decided on Sunday. So for us, it’s important to win our next match on Sunday with two goals difference if we want to qualify for the final round of the qualifications.
“Everything will be decided in the last match and this is what we expected you know even from the first, so the last match will be like a final match you know deciding match who will go to the next round.
“If South Africa wins tonight, then we have to win with two goals difference, very simple calculation. So, we have to approach this seriously, and we all have to do our best to make it happen.”
Ghana will have to fight for the maximum points at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium when they clash with Bafana Bafana at 21:00.
