Mayo – What I Told My Dad About Chiefs

CR Belouizdad striker Khanyisa Mayo has admitted he is dreaming to continue with his father’s legacy at Kaizer Chiefs at some point in his career.

Mayo is the son of former Kaizer Chiefs striker Patrick Mayo. Mayo Sr played for Amakhosi between 2003 and 2007 where he started as off a striker before being converted to a left-back. He scored six goals in 70 appearances.

The 51-year-old has 18 caps for Bafana Bafana having scored six goals and Khanyisa was a few minutes away from following in his father’s footsteps by joining Chiefs but were beaten to the signature by Belouizdad.

In a recent interview with iDiski Times, the former Cape Town City striker opened up how close he came to joining Amakhosi before admitting that there’s still a chance to continue with the Mayo surname in the colours of Chiefs, revealing a Chiefs promise he made to his father.

“It was close… I was coming back from training and my agent called me saying that there’s a team that wants you now, and to leave as in tomorrow,” Mayo told iDiski Times.

“So, I was like, ‘Let me think about it, give me a few minutes, I’ll think about it’. But I also wanted a challenge.

“I wanted to challenge myself. I said okay, this is an opportunity to go out of South Africa, to get a better opportunity, and also the history of the club — playing CAF Champions League, and they were in the second round of the Champions League.

“I told myself I wanted to play in the Champions League and I got the opportunity to play in the Champions League. It’s a dream come true. It’s not easy to qualify for the Champions League.

“And… after we’ve submitted the documents and then an hour later, Chiefs came knocking interested in me. And they were willing to meet the asking demands of Mr [John] Comitis.

“Unfortunately, I had signed the contract and sent it back to Belouizdad. But, yeah, it makes me proud.

“I said to my father once I wish I could finish what you have started, to go play for Kaizer Chiefs.”
