Mokwena On First Casablanca Derby And No Fans

Wydad Athletic Club head coach Rulani Mokwena says he’s proud of the efforts of his players after the 1-1 draw against Raja Athletic Club in the Casablanca Derby.

Mokwena’s side are fifth in the Botola Pro after the stalemate against the reigning league champions who are languishing in ninth place.

RS Berkane are currently setting the pace at the summit of the Moroccan top-flight which has caused growing unease at the Casablanca giants.

However, with the 2024/25 season still in it’s infancy with only 11 rounds of fixtures played, Mokwena bemoaned the way they conceded, but remains defiant in his quest to restore the glory of the Red Castle.

“It’s a derby, I thought we were in control in both halves, the boys did very well to fight back, I’m disappointed in the goal we conceded, that picture of Zehouni coming from the wing is the same picture against Mas [Fes], the same picture as Soualem, against MAT, the same in the last four, five games,” Mokwena said.

“But I’m happy with the players, the mentality, the fight, you all know I have watched the last four derbies in the Botola and we struggled against Raja, but today we dominated Raja and I’m very proud of the players for that.

“I don’t like the game without fans but I understand why we have to play sometimes without fans.”
