Official: Zim Announce New Head Coach

The Zimbabwean Football Association has appointed German-born Michael Nees as head coach of the men’s national team.

ZIFA announced the appointment of the 57-year-old, replacing interim coach Jairos Tapera who briefly led The Warriors during their disastrous 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Having previously coached on the African continent for the Rwanda Senior Men’s National Team, Nees is said to boast a wealth of football experience spanning over 25 years.

The new coach, who holds an UEFA Pro Licence and previously worked as Education Officer within SAFA’s structures between 2008 and 2012, is tasked with getting Zimbabwe’s qualifying campaign back on track where they are yet to record a victory.

“The Zimbabwe Football Association is delighted to announce the appointment of Michael Nees as the new head coach of the Zimbabwe Men’s National Team.

“The 57-year-old German will lead the Warriors in their quest for success in the AFCON 2025 and FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

“ZIFA is confident that Michael Nees’s appointment will usher in a new era of success for the Warriors. His vast experience, combined with his innovative coaching style, makes him the ideal candidate to lead our national team to new heights,” the statement from Lincoln Mutasa, Chairman – ZIFA Normalisation Committee read.

The Warriors sit rock bottom in Group C having suffered two defeats and two draws in four matches.
