Tau Reacts To CAF Award

Al Ahly and Bafana Bafana winger Percy Tau sent a message of thanks after being named CAF Interclub Player of the Year.

Tau, 29, beat Peter Shalulile and Fiston Mayele to become the first South African footballer to win the prestigious accolade after his fine performances last season.

The award is handed out to the best player playing in Africa, and Tau won the gong after leading Al Ahly to the CAF Champions League title last season.

The Bafana winger scored five goals and set up five more, which made him the top scorer in the competition (excluding preliminary rounds), while also winning the Egyptian Premier League and the Egyptian Super Cup in 2022/23.

Tau, however, wasn’t able to attend the awards gala, as he is currently in Jeddah, where his team gears up for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.

“Thank you for [the] recognition,” Tau wrote on social media.

“I’m humbled and pleased to be receiving the award. Special credit to the fans, coaches and my teammates.”

But Tau wasn’t the only South African to be honoured by CAF, as Desiree Ellis was named Women’s Coach of the Year for a fourth time, while Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies were named CAF Women’s Club of the Year.
