Broos Explains Lakay Snub

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has explained he feels Fagrie Lakay hasn’t offered enough when previously called up to earn a spot in his squad for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Lakay, 26, has scored three goals in 14 appearances for Pyramids this season and reached double figures in Egypt last campaign.

He’s also one of the few South African strikers who play regularly in the CAF Champions League and many thought he should’ve made the squad, given the withdrawals of Lyle Foster and Lebo Mothiba.

However, Broos feels Lakay hasn’t done enough during previous call-ups.

“I don’t think so,” Broos said when asked whether it was a missed opportunity not call Lakay up.

“We had Fagrie a few times with the national team, and honestly the performances of Fagrie were not good.

“I saw then after that he doesn’t always play with Pyramids, so again this is a choice you make and I made the choice not to take him to into the selection.

Broos instead called Themba Zwane, Percy Tau, Oswin Appolis, Mihlali Mayambela, Zakhele Lepasa and Evidence Makgopa as his forward options.
