Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has defended his decision to once again exclude talisman Percy Tau from his squad, advising the Al Ahly man to switch clubs in order to nail down a regular starting berth again.
Tau, 30, has not featured for South Africa since the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers clash against Zimbabwe back in June 2024 and was again omitted from the back-to-back 2025 Afcon qualifiers against Congo Brazzaville in Gqeberha (Bafana won 5-0) and Brazzaville (1-1).
Speaking to the media ahead of this Friday’s clash against Uganda away, the Belgian tactician reckoned the best way for Tau to force his way back into the squad is to leave the Egyptian giants, where he has seemingly fallen out-of-favour, and seek a move elsewhere.
“You know Percy Tau don’t play anymore for the moment,” Broos told the media.
“He’s always on the bench. So, when I said already two months ago the environment for him in Al Ahly is not positive, at a certain moment they wanted to sell him, and he wasn’t sold.

“Then you have the critics on social media from South Africans who were not happy with his performances.
“So, I don’t think that it’s now the right moment for Percy to come and be with Bafana Bafana.
“But it doesn’t mean he will never come again, so I hope, I really hope he can change club. That he can be in a more positive environment and that he can make performances again that we can expect from him.
“And then he will again be a very important player for Bafana Bafana,” Broos further said.
Tau’s current contract with the Red Devils runs out in June 2025, which means he can sign a pre-contract with a club of his choice come January.
