South African won 4-3 via a penalty shootout after a stoppage-time goal from Neo Bohloko saw Amajimbos draw 1-1 with Tanzania in the 6 Nation tournament in Ivory Coast.
It was a slow stop-start to the game, as the two teams sized each other up in the early game on Thursday. Vela Khumalo’s team took early control of possession with the Tanzanians looking to hit on the counter.
South Africa’s dangerman Emile Witbooi was causing problems for the Tanzanians and he thought he had a penalty in the 29th minute, as he was brought down in the box after a good run, however, the referee waved play on, and Tanzania had their best chance on the counter, but Lehlohonolo Mosia made a good save.
Five minutes later they had another good opportunity, but this time Mosia was lucky as the attempted shot went wide of goal. At the break, it remained 0-0, with the Tanzanians paying spell attention to mark Witbooi out of the game as much as possible.
The Tanzanians missed another good chance early in the second half, blazing over from in front of goal, but it was Amajimbos who were soon back in control of the match, but not creating clear-cut opportunities, though they did close in the 70th minute, with a ball whipped across the face of goal.
Mosia made another good save with ten minutes to go, but could do nothing from the resulting corner, as it was blasted in to make it 1-0 to Tanzania.
Just before full-time Neo Bohloko found the back of the net, scoring from close range following a corner kick.
Mosia starred in the shootout, saving three penalties to earn Khumalo’s team the win.
