Ellis Names Banyana Squad For Olympic Qualifiers

Janine Van Why headlines the Banyana Banyana squad to face the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 2024 Olympic Qualifiers having been absent from the side since their return from their successful Women’s Africa Cup Of Nations (WAFCON) campaign in 2022.

The important two-legged fixture will be used as send-off matches for the 183 times capped Van Wyk. This is also a dream come true for the former captain because if she would play in both she will become the most capped player on the African continent – male and female.

Van Wyk has been to the 2012 London Olympic Games with Banyana, the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, she was also part of the WAFCON winning squad in Morocco in 2022 but missed out on the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The 36-year-old announced recently that she will call time on her glittering career.

The African champions will want to continue their good streak at international tournaments after reaching the second round at the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The team missed out on the previous Olympic Games after losing to Botswana in 2019. They will hope to avoid that also with the return of some of their stars who missed out on the tour of the USA and the recently concluded COSAFA Women’s championship.

The matches are set for 25 October in DRC with the second leg in South Africa a few days later.

Here is the squad to face DRC:
