SuperSport United interim coach Andre Arendse is confident that his side will not get dragged into the relegation playoffs despite dropping crucial points against Orlando Pirates in Polokwane on Tuesday.
The 1-0 loss meant staying in 14th place on the standings for the former league champions and equal on points with Cape Town City behind them who have an inferior goal difference.
Matsatsantsa next take on Richards Bay at home on Saturday, 24 May, and Arendse maintained confidence that they won’t go to the playoffs.
“But like I said in my [TV] interview, we are going to do this,” said Arendse.
“There is no doubt in my mind that this group of players is going to see this team over the line, and I look forward to seeing that. You always want to score, especially when you’re down there and goal difference, as you rightfully say is going to count for something.
“So, we’ve got a few goals over Cape Town City, but we’ve got to be careful. We’ve got to start keeping clean sheets. That for me is first and foremost and that was my mandate for the team tonight, clean sheet.
“And that for me, is the worst-case scenario. Okay, didn’t happen, but I cannot fault the effort. I cannot fault the performance.”
