iDiski TV analyst Junior Khanye reckons that Orlando Pirates’ new coach should add depth and not change philosophy if they are to have a better shot at challenging Mamelodi Sundowns for the league.
Pirates, under the guidance of the now-departed Jose Riveiro, have twice finished second behind perennial winners Sundowns and look set to do the same this season as their nearest chasers Stellenbosch FC, can only reach 50 points.
Pirates are currently behind the champions with 60 points and one game still to play but can only reach 63 points if they win the last encounter.
With Riveiro gone, Khanye says the person that replaces the Spaniard should have a similar approach to the game including believing in young players, add depth enough to win all their matches as that’s the only way to beat Sundowns to the podium.
“Pirates, it doesn’t mean that they are bad after losing in the Champions League semi-finals and also coming number two [in the league],” said Khanye on iDiski TV.
“They are the closest [to Sundowns], the difference will be six points if they win their remaining matches. Going forward they mustn’t lose games but firstly they must bring a coach who will not change a lot of things when he arrives.
“Someone who will add depth, keep the same philosophy and he add some tactics here and there and win all the games and dominate.
“The coach that will come I think should be similar to [Jose] Riveiro. Believe in those youngsters and play them according to their strengths. He is not going to win all the games because also Sundowns will still be there but all the other games he must win.
“He must be a coach that will add depth because if you look, they have one set of an 11 and their bench it’s not really impressive and sometimes they lack match fitness like [Karim] Kimvuidi and [Bandile] Shandu.
“He needs to have depth enough to have another starting team on the bench and the other on the stands.”
