Karim Kimvuidi came off the bench to set up Mohau Nkota as Orlando Pirates registered their 19th victory of the season, beating SuperSport United 1-0 in Polokwane on Tuesday to set a new record of wins in the PSL era.
Pirates remained in second position on the log with 59 points in 26 outings, while SuperSport remained in the relegation playoffs zone in 14th place equal on 26 points with Cape Town City in 15th position, however the former league champions have a game and half in hand.
The home side looked like they would score first threatening as early as the second minute. They won a set-piece after Christian Saile as fouled, however Lyle Lakay’s kick just landed safely in the Pirates ‘keeper’s hands.
Three minutes later Nkota found Tshegofatso Mabasa in the box but the latter couldn’t hit the target allowing defenders to make a clearance. There was a good opportunity for SuperSport to break the deadlock in the 10th minute with Lebohang Maboe setting up Saile but the striker’s header went wide.
Pirates got into the game finding good combinations Deon Hotto coming from the left crossed to Mabasa in the box but Thakasani Mbanjwa made an important blocked. Maboe could have broken the deadlock three minutes to the break with his strike if he didn’t shoot over the bar.

The sides came back for the second half unchanged and it was the home side with an immediate chance to take the lead through Maboe however Mbekezeli Mbokazi denied him. Two minutes to the hour mark Mabasa found Nkota in the box but Mbanjwa did well to block him from scoring.
Pirates persisted to search for the opener and their solution came from the bench as substituted Kimvuidi set-up Nkota who didn’t miss in the 72nd minute. Kimvuidi could have added a second goal for the visitors with 10 minutes to go but Mbanjwa stood his ground.
Meanwhile, SuperSport welcome Richards Bay at the Peter Mokaba stadium in their penultimate match of the campaign on Saturday while Pirates are away at AmaZulu also their second last encounter of the term.
