Riveiro Reserves Praise For Unsung Pirates Hero

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro reserved some rare praise for one of the unsung heroes of the squad this season.

Makhehleni Makhaula, the unfashionable number six role, that goes about his business, silently but effectively has been immense in the impressive run Pirates have been on this season.

The 35-year-old joined Pirates from AmaZulu in January 2023 and the only two games he’s been left out of this matchday squad this season were; defeats to Magesi 3-2 in the Carling Kockout and the 1-0 loss against Cape Town City in the league.

“Makhaula, I think his performance speaks about the moment he’s going through, I’m sorry… I don’t speak about individuals,” Riveiro said after he won the Man of the Match award in the Soweto Derby victory.

“His performance is talking volumes, he’s a proper professional, I think you can imagine, he is working so hard, he’s pushing himself and everyone around to have this mentality that is taking us to the space we’re in right now – he was crucial… [in the derby win].”

Makhaula has racked up 54 appearances for Pirates since his arrival from Usuthu where he was the club captain.
