Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Derrick Spencer says defender Njabulo Ngcobo should look to prove himself at a new club after he was transfer-listed by Amakhosi.
Ngcobo, 29, still has one more left on his contract at Naturena but was put on the transfer list by Chiefs, as reported by iDiski Times.
He joined Amakhosi at the beginning of the 2021/22 season from Swallows after he was named the PSL Defender of The Season with the Dube Birds in the previous campaign after they gained promotion in 2020.
The 29-year-old signed a contract that will last until June 2024, meaning he is entering the last season in his contract with the club – but Chiefs are seemingly keen to cash in on him.
“It’s a tough one, it’s a very tricky situation to be in. If he wants to prove himself, he must go and find another team because he has been transfer-listed,” Spencer told iDiski Times.
“He must ask for a loan, go out there and prove that you are a quality player. The time he left Swallows, he was the Defender of the Season, so he’s a good player.
“It is just currently the whole group of Chiefs, it’s difficult to see who is playing better. It is not nice to see.”
Ngcobo just started eight matches in all competitions for Chiefs last term, with coach Zwane preferring Zitha Kwinika, Siyabonga Ngezana and Edmilson Dove in the middle of defence.
As things stand, it is highly unlikely that Zwane will be Chiefs coach next term, as iDiski Times has been informed the club’s leadership are in official talks with Young Africans coach Nasreddine Nabi.
Spencer insisted a new coach alone will not solve the trick for the Glamour Boys, if they want to close the gap to Mamelodi Sundowns – having lost a record of 12 league matches in 2022/23.
“The squad is very thin,” added Spencer, who won eight trophies at Chiefs including two league titles.
“They need to go out there and buy players, get scouts to buy players. You look at Mamelodi Sundowns, they don’t just buy, they scout first and sign the player that will fit their style of play.
“Look at this boy Marcelo Allende, how did they get him? Chiefs needs to do the same thing to start all over again.”
Spencer himself joined Chiefs ahead of the 2003/04 season, alongside Fabian McCarthy, Patrick Mayo, Jabulani Mendu, the late Lucky Maselesele, Sibusiso Dlamini, Bevan Fransman and Kaizer Junior Motaung.
He left the club ahead of the 2008/09 season to join Mamelodi Sundowns after winning eight trophies during his time at Naturena.
