Mamelodi Sundowns made it 13 wins from 14 games after beating SuperSport United 3-0 in the Tshwane Derby on Wednesday evening at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium.
In a derby that has been rather one-sided in recent seasons, with Sundowns winning five of the last seven, it was always going to be an uphill battle for the hosts.
SuperSport’s vision has been altered from the all-conquering side that won three league titles consecutively more than two decades ago, with a new approach of developing and selling off talent to stay afloat now.
Despite the odd win here and there, the rivalry is epitomised by the fact that their last win came via Tapelo Maseko’s heroics and he was then signed by Sundowns at the end of that season.
Lucas Ribeiro Costa, one of the favourites for the Premier Soccer League Footballer of the Season ran riot in the early stages but it was new signing Jayden Adams who found the net as early as the 11th minute which led to some acrobatic celebrations to his new fanbase in Tshwane.
Tashreeq Matthews, who only recently returned to the squad after an injury is back to where he left off, scoring goals as he added two, profiting from Lucas Ribeiro Costa and Lucas Shalulile who were at their fluent and dynamic best in an exciting attacking trio.
Both bagged assists for Matthews on either side of the half-time whistle before Miguel Cardoso opted to rest the likes of the Brazilian and Marcelo Allende ahead of their top-of-the-table clash against Orlando Pirates this weekend.
Sundowns maintained their six-point lead at the summit of the table, as Pirates beat Sekhukhune United 2-0 in Polokwane in the other 19h30 kickoff this evening.
