Mngqithi Reacts To Downs Win

Mamelodi Sundowns co-head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has commented on his side’s comfortable 2-0 win against AS Maniema, that saw them advance to the CAF Champions League group stages.

Downs beat AS Maniema 2-0 at Loftus Stadium on Sunday afternoon in the second leg of their second preliminary round tie to advance 4-2 on aggregate.

The first leg had ended 2-2 in Congo last week, but today’s important home win saw Bafana Ba Style go through comfortably.

The Tshwane giants made sure to use their home ground advantage to book their ticket in this year’s CAF Champions League group stages, and Mngqithi says they were in control for most of the game.

“I think we just we started the game very well,” Mngqithi said after the match.

“We know they they might want to impose themselves a little bit considering the scoreline. But surprisingly, they never really pushed hard.

“They only pressed with their front three, which is what they did even in the first round. And we created a lot of very good playing angles.

“Unfortunate not to have scored from some of the best build-ups that we had first half, very unlucky Kutumela, in one of them Vila, a little bit delayed to terminate but generally the performance was very good.

“Second half they introduced number 28 to play with two strikers up top and they wanted to pump balls into the box a lot, but we managed to deal with them up until just one spell maybe of 5, 10 minutes where we lost control of the game and we started playing too many one touches, and too many long balls and they started to gain momentum.

“But immediately we brought it back and we changed, brought in Pitso to give us a little bit of a play, brought in Neo Maema, and Kermit Erasmus and Pavol, then we stabilised again, and we were in control of the game from the beginning. I don’t think there was any real threat that we encountered in this game.

“Credit must be given to the boys, to the whole technical team, and everybody else involved in the club, because it was a very good performance that personally, I think it deserved more than just two goals.”
