Mamelodi Sundowns co-head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has revealed which new players the club has registered for the CAF Champions League group stages and discussed if not winning the competition would be a failure after their heavy investment.

Masandawana will face Sudanese side Al Hilal Omdurman in their opener of the CAFCL group stages on Friday, having met the same opponents last year, beating them 2-0 at home before collection a goalless draw in Sudan.

Mngqithi explained that Downs have registered their three new signings for the next stage of the competition, including Erwin Saavedra, even though he has not yet been officially announced by the club.

“For this period, there are only a few [new] players who are registered. It was Surprise Ralani, Teboho Mokoena and [Erwin] Saavedra,” he said.

“The rest of the squad was registered earlier.”

Mngqithi also discussed whether not winning the competition would be seen as a failure for the club after they invested heavily in the January transfer window.

“I did say that [we’re signing players for the Champions League] because we are looking at our competitors in the Champions League and we are trying to make sure to get to that level and make sure we are at stage we compete at almost the same level with them,” he added.

“One mentality issue is to win the Champions League and all these seasons – even when we did not win it – our plan was always to fight to win it.

“That’s why we are always fighting to be in the Champions League every year. Signings are always influenced by us trying to be better than what we were the previous year. We are hoping we will get there.

“I would not regard no winning the Champions League as a failure but it’s something I would not want to experience, I would love Sundowns winning the Champions League. The players would love to see that, the board, the president and everyone – the whole team is gunning for it.

“We understand what is at stake, but we also know it’s a very long road.”

Meanwhile, Rulani Mokwena did confirm that Saavedra will arrive in South Africa this week and probably have his first sessions at the club on Thursday.
