Former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Katlego ‘Killer’ Mphela has pleaded for Rulani Mokwena to be given another shot at winning the CAF Champions League next season.
Mokwena is in his first full season as lone head coach at the club and he faltered at the Champions League semi-finals this season, going down 2-0 to ES de Tunis over two legs.
The coach is, however, enjoying an impressive streak in the league, where is yet to lose a game since take over and secured their seventh successive DStv Premiership title with six games to play.
Sundowns also won the inaugural African Football League (AFL) under Mokwena and are in the Nedbank Cup semi-final, with Mphela saying he deserves more time to also succeed in Africa.
“Give him one more year,” said Mphela on iDiski TV.
“One more year is not bad. Give him one more year plus an ultimatum of what they want because it is easy for Sundowns to win domestic cups in the country.
“Give him one more year to prove himself in Africa and if he falls short then they can see what to do in the following year. He does deserve one more season, you never know what will happen.
“I think people are judging him based on the money spent in the team and Sundowns wants to win everything. You have a president who wants to win CAF and everything and he has spent a lot of money.
“I don’t think they care about the domestic league so much, they want the Champions League.
“The last time they did it was with Pitso [Mosimane] so give him one year, one more chance and take it from there.”
