Former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns star Teko Modise has revealed that he would like to see his two ex clubs in this year’s final, but insisted Chippa United and Stellenbosch FC cannot be ruled out.
Modise, 41, won the Ke Yona Cup during his playing days with Masandawana in 2015, when Sundowns beat Ajax Cape Town on penalties.
He’s now working as ambassador for the competitions and chatted to iDiski Times journalist David Kappel about the upcoming semi-finals.
“I think it is interesting games, I mean you look at the teams that are remaining, especially from a Stellenbosch perspective,” he told iDiski Times.
“I mean that’s the team that has been exciting all year, all season and that’s a team that has grown leaps and bounds. And now that they’ve tasted lifting a trophy, being on the podium, I’m sure they want more.
“And then also look at Chippa as well, since coach [Kwanele] Kopo and Thabo September have been there, they’re playing better, they’re getting better results. And I’m sure they’ll be looking to cause an upset but of course Orlando Pirates want to defend their title.
“For Mamelodi Sundowns it is a trophy that eluded them last season. And I think those are four teams that are very interesting and both big teams are playing away, so they have to adjust to the away field and the fans, but we know Orlando Pirates has got the fans.
“I’m just looking forward to seeing if Stellies and Sundowns’ history can repeat itself, just like what happened last season.
“And also to see if Orlando Pirates can actually play and be able to bypass Chippa, which is starting to become a problem because the last time I saw them playing against SuperSport, they’re a very interesting team to watch and I’m just looking forward. Basically those two games for me I think I’ll watch them like a hawk.”
When asked to put his head on the chopping block, Modise revealed hat he’d love to see a final between defending champions Pirates and newly confirmed DStv Premiership champions Sundowns.
“I still have a soft spot for Stellies. But I would also want to see a big final of maybe Mamelodi Sundowns against Orlando Pirates,” he added.
“I think for fans [also] because that’s the fixture that is starting to become a blockbuster fixture. So I can just imagine the atmosphere on that final. So we’ll approve it.
“That’s the fixture that I’m looking forward to but then again, they still have to beat Stellies and Chippa.”
Chippa host Pirates at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium at 15:00 on Saturday, while Stellies host Sundowns at Danie Craven Stadium at the same time on Sunday.
