Official: CAF Confirm Champions League Draw

The draw for the new CAF Champions League took place in Cairo on Friday and Mamelodi Sundowns and AmaZulu have learnt their opponents.

Overall, 54 clubs have entered the competition, but only 44 will take part in the first preliminary round.

As one of CAF’s 10 highest-ranked teams, Mamelodi Sundowns were exempted from taking part in the first preliminary round and will only enter the competition in the second preliminary round – same goes for Pitso Mosimane’s defending champions Al Ahly.

The remaining 44 clubs will play as of the first preliminary round and consist of ranked clubs (16) and non-ranked clubs (28) according to the official clubs ranking.

Benni McCarthy’s AmaZulu will face Nyasa Big Bullets from Malawi in the first round. If Usuthu progress they face a tough opponent in the next round, in former champions TP Mazembe.

Sundowns will face the winners between Bouenguidi Sports (Gabon) and AS Maniema (DRC) in the next round.
