Rulani On Big CAFCL Win & Having Shalulile Back

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena is happy to take a 4-0 lead home before the second leg of their CAF Champions League tie against Bumamuru FC.

Sundowns were convincing winners on Friday in the first leg in Burundi, with Lucas Ribeiro grabbing a brace, while Lesiba Nku and substitute Peter Shalulile also got on the scoresheet.

Mokwena said it was a tough game, especially playing on an unfamiliar astroturf pitch.

“The game was an interesting game against a very good opponent,” Mokwena said in the post-match press conference.

“Difficult conditions with an astroturf, which is something we normally are not used to. And then, of course, the heat, but we played very, very well.

“And we created some very, very good goals against a highly motivated team, and we are happy to take the score-line into the second leg.”

When asked by local media why Shalulile didn’t start, Mokoena said the Namibian is not quite ready for 90 minutes of football yet, having only just returned from injury.

“He’s been injured,” Mokwena explained.

“It’s very simple, Peter has been injured and he’s only recovered now during the FIFA break, so doesn’t have enough minutes in his legs to be able to play 90.”

Mokwena and his men will now switch their focus back to local football, with a DStv Premiership clash against Orlando Pirates awaiting them on Wednesday before they will face Kaizer Chiefs in the MTN8 semi-final second leg.
