Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly edged Al-Merrikh 3-2 in their CAF Champions League Group A clash at the Al Ahly Stadium on Saturday evening.
Ahly appeared to be cruising to their first win after a shaky start in the ‘Group of Death’, following the 0-0 draw with Al Hilal and the 1-0 defeat at the hands of his former club Mamelodi Sundowns last week.
Mohamed Sherif’s brace in the opening twenty minutes, the first of which was set up by the returning Percy Tau looked to have the Red Devils comfortable but Nigerian forward Tony Edjomariegwe made things nervy on the brink of half-time by reducing the deficit.
And the nerves would have been much higher when Elsamani Saadeldin equalised after 69 minutes with only their second shot on target in Al Salam City.
But their influential midfielder Amr El-Solia forced an own-goal Mustafa Karshoum with ten minutes remaining secured the vital three points for the Red Devils to kickstart their campaign.
The win moved Ahly into second place with four points, three behind group leaders Sundowns after three games played.
