Yanga Coach – What I Told My Players After Downs Draw

Young Africans SC head coach Miguel Gamondi has revealed he told his players that the CAF Champions League quarter-final first leg against Mamelodi Sundowns was just the first half.

The Tanzanian champions held Sundowns to a goalless draw in front of 60,000 supporters at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on Saturday.

Gamondi’s side travelled to South Africa on Tuesday, as – unlike Sundowns – they had no domestic fixture for their most important second-leg clash.

The 2022/23 CAF Confederations Cup finalists failed to win any of their away games in the group stages where they finished second behind Al Ahly.

“I told my players that these CAF Champions League quarter-final games are not just 90 minutes but 180 minutes,” Gamondi said, as per The Guardian.

“We managed to secure a draw here at home. Now, we’ll return to the training ground to analyze our performance and address our shortcomings.

“The crucial thing is that we’re not trailing at home because if you’re trailing at home, you face a significant challenge away. So, we’ll go and fight away.”

Sundowns will host Yanga at 20:00 at Loftus Versfeld on Friday evening, needing a home win, while a scoring draw or away win would see Young Africans qualify for the semi-finals.
