Stellenbosch FC passed their second CAF assignment with flying colours after a 5-0 victory over Nsingizini Hotspurs for an emphatic 8-0 aggregate score in their CAF Confederation Cup Preliminary round clash at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday afternoon.
Lehlogonolo Mojela opened his account for the club by putting Stellies 1-0 up in the 10th minute.
The hosts wasted a chance to double their lead when Langelihle Phili fired over in the 19th minute from range.
In the 27th minute, Phili made up for his earlier miss with an unstoppable left-footed effort to make it 2-0.
Mojela came close to bagging his brace in the 35th minute but saw his toe-poked effort sail just wide.
It was almost three in the 37th minute but Spurs keeper Sibusiso Dlamini pulled off a double save to deny both Mojela and Phili, with Stellies heading into the break leading 2-0.
Stellies made three changes at the break, but goals continued to rain, as Andre De Jong tapped into an open net after a defensive blunder to make it 3-0 in the 51st minute.
The Cape Winelands outfit should’ve increased their tally in the 70th minute but no one was at the far post to capitalize on Devin Titus’ cross.
Stellies were not done yet, making it 4-0 in the 85th minute through former Kaizer Chiefs youngster Omega Mdaka.
Mervin Boji added a fifth in the 89th minute to all but seal another huge win for the Cape Winelands outfit.
In the end, it was a memorable afternoon for Steve Barker’s men who made light work of Hotspurs to advance to the next round in their maiden CAF participation.
