Former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Benedict Tso Vilakazi says the Carling Knockout Cup Final between Magesi FC and Mamelodi Sundowns is as good as Bafana-Bafana versus the club.
The two meet in the cup final at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein on Saturday evening (18:00) with expectations that Sundowns will triumph over the Betway Premiership rookies, despite their good run in the competition.
Magesi eliminated Orlando Pirates, TS Galaxy and Richards Bay en route to the final and now face a star-studded Brazilian side that had eight players in the national team that secured qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) recently.
Of the eight, six started the last group qualifying game match against South Sudan in Cape Town.
Vilakazi noted that his former side usually struggles to win domestic cups but believes having players who are the core of Hugo Broos’ squad gives them an edge over the Limpopo side even though he warns against underestimating them.
“It’s Goliath against David I mean that’s very clear and you expect the giant to win but Clinton Larsen came and beat Pirates and he is in the final,” he said on iDiski TV.
“One thing that I’m happy about is that maybe is going to change for a while because Sundowns always struggle to win these trophies. The league is a guarantee but in cup games they always find it tough. But now I think they’ve got an edge against Magesi”.
“I mean looking at it pound for pound with players, they [Sundowns] have players playing in the national team, they have been doing well.
“The confidence of those boys is high. If you’ve got eight players in your team that are representing us [South Africa] that’s the team itself. So it is Bafana-Bafana against Magesi but let’s not underestimate Clinton Larsen”.
