Tembo: Kanu Is Who I Needed To Be With Me

Richards Bay coach Kaitano Tembo says the appointment of Vusumuzi Vilakazi is what he needs because he is proven at the higher level and can ‘see the game in a different way’.

The latter part was on show as Bay forcefully held Orlando Pirates in a DStv Premiership match last week at King Zwelithini Stadium.

Vilakazi was appointed by Bay on 12 November, having resigned as the technical director of Chippa United. He was appointed as the senior coach and had sufficient time to blend together to prepare for the match against the Soweto giants in Durban.

“All over the world, it is always important to have someone you can able lean on in terms of information, in terms of seeing the game in a different way I cannot see,”  said Tembo.

Bay, who has been battling at the second bottom of the table, felt that Tembo needed help and Sboniso Gumede was not sharing enough knowledge with him because the former AmaZulu defender is a novice at this level in coaching terms.

Kanu spent close to 20 years at Arrows – from a player to communications manager, club assistant, and coach in the DStv Diski Challenge, where he won the reserve league twice for Abafana Bes’Thende.

He was appointed as the co-coach with Mabuti Khenyeza at the beginning of last season, replacing the sacked Lehlohonolo Seema.

“I think Kanu brings that, which is very important. I think we worked well together. Hopefully, we will continue in the same way. He is a welcome addition to the technical team,” added Tembo.

The duo shifts their focus now as the Bay hosts Stellenbosch FC in the Carling Knockout semi-final at King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
